Swakopmund
It may surprise you to know that the tortoise can hardly walk this morning, because of achy legs, whereas the hare is feeling sprightly!
We set off on our 23 hour journey to Windhoek on a Sleepliner. This is the most luxurious coach I have been on, with two levels, loads of leg room and seats that can be fully reclined. We were informed that we would be allowed two fifteen minute refreshment breaks – but only if time allowed!
The time passed quite quickly, and I spent most of it trying to spot exciting wildlife. The best I managed though was an ostrich and a springbok. Perhaps there will be giraffes on the next stage…
It seems that Table Mountain is just one of a series of flat-topped mountains in South Africa. These ranges seemed to carry on all the way up to Namibia. The rest of the countryside was pretty monotonous, and relatively uninhabited.
When we finally arrived in Windhoek the sun was shining. Apparently we are gluttons for punishment though, so we decided to jump straight on the next bus and head to Swakopmund. This was a short journey, of just 5 hours. Namibia has a very low population density, so mile after mile of road passed through scrubland. As we neared our destination, this turned to desert. Still no exciting animals though.
When we were about twenty minutes from the coast, we commented on how beautiful the weather was. We could not have been more wrong. As we approached the sea, a thick mist descended. It was freezing cold when we got off the bus, and we couldn’t see anything. Not exactly the beach break we were hoping for!!! Fingers crossed that things improve tomorrow.
As for the tortoise, he is still complaining about his sore legs!
