Sneak Birthday

Graham is going to turn 35 on Friday, but we are going to spend most of the day on a bus. I thought the (soon to be) grumpy old man deserved some celebrations for the big day so we had a surprise Sunday birthday instead.

The day started with delicious croissants from a French Patisserie, followed by Vietnamese style coffee (good coffee with a tonne of condensed milk thrown in). We then headed to an amazing swimming pool bar, and spent the afternoon there.

In the evening we had the first good wine we’ve had since we were in Cape Town four months ago, and then headed to the fanciest restaurant in town. After many months of eating in the cheapest places, usually sitting on miniature chairs on the street, this experience was incredible. The staff were so attentive, and I even felt like it might be safe to drink the water from my frequently topped up glass (I will get back to you in a few weeks about my typhoid status!).

We ordered the Lao Tasting Menu and tried all sorts of delicious things. A firm (surprise) favourite was river weed with sesame. Delicious. There was so much food, and we had the best meal of the trip so far. The most expensive restaurant in town cost 17 euros each, and it was worth every precious penny.

Happy Birthday G!
