Cusco – we came, we saw, we ate!
With only a few days left of Graham’s world wide adventure, we decided to spend the final week in Cuzco. The original name of the city was Qusqu, but the Spanish couldn’t pronounce it and changed it to Cuzco. This apparently changed the meaning from naval (i.e. centre of the Incan world) to stray dogs. In more recent times, a governor changed the name to Cusco, which doesn’t really mean anything as he didn’t want his city to be named after the dogs!
I hadn’t been feeling well for most of the time we were in Bolivia or Puno, which I think was mainly due to the very low standards of food hygiene. I had basically spent most of those three weeks living on a couple of cookies a day and a bit of Sprite. Thankfully things are much better in Peru and all of a sudden I got my appetite back.
The first stop was Los Perros where they have burgers as big as your face. Then there is the delicious Cafe Morena which serves fancy versions of the classic Peruvian dishes. We also found a chocolate cafe which was amazing as the standard chocolate bars here are rubbish!
We did a couple of walking tours in the city and the surrounding countryside and learnt a bit more about Incan history. They Incas were incredible builders, and the Incan walls were pretty much the only survivors in a big earthquake a few years ago.
We spent Graham’s last couple of days here living in luxury, cashing in air-miles to stay in the swanky Royal Inka Hotel.
