Arthurs Pass and Fox Glacier

Posted by in New Zealand, Trip

From Christchurch we drove across Arthurs Pass, towards Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers. The scenery on the route was stunning, and we stopped frequently to take photographs. This area is home to the kea bird. The kea is known to be a bit cheeky, and often steals food from unsuspecting tourists. We were lucky enough to spot one strolling past our parked car. The sun was shining during our time on the east of the island, but as we crossed the mountains towards the west the sky filled with clouds…read more

Christchurch

Posted by in New Zealand, Trip

Our next point of call was Christchurch, where we were to spend a couple of nights staying with friends of Graham’s family from their days in Indonesia. We stopped on the way to take some photos of the beautiful drive. The McKenzie family had sadly lost their home in the earthquakes a few years ago. They now live in a lovely house on the outskirts of the city. It was very interesting to hear first hand accounts of the disaster that affected so many people in this part of the…read more

Next stop: Wellington. We don’t have much to report from Wellington, except to say that we stayed in a hostel run by a very grumpy man. The weather took a turn for the worse and we ended up putting up our tent in the rain. Luckily the Australian Open final was on TV in the evening, giving us the perfect excuse to escape to the pub. We found a sports bar and settled in to watch the match. This turned into an epic battle and we only managed to stay…read more

Seal of Approval

Posted by in New Zealand, Trip

It seemed a shame to neglect our upper bodies after yesterdays intensive lower body workout, so we decided that a few hours of sea kayaking was in order. Ross’s friend Charlotte decided to join us today. She had gone one better than our hike up Mount Taranaki, and had done the same walk but overnight. They reached the summit around midnight before descending in the dark. Charlotte apparently lives by the philosophy that sleep is for wimps!! We hired two double kayaks and paddled out to sea. The weather report…read more

Conquering Mount Taranaki

“When life brings you mountains, you don’t waste your time asking why; you spend your time climbing over them.” ― A.J. Darkholme, Rise of the Morningstar The second stop of our New Zealand adventure was in New Plymouth. Grahams old work colleague Ross moved out here a few years ago, and offered to show us why New Zealand is known as the adventure capital of the world. We set up camp for the next few days in a caravan in his garden and agreed to get up at 05:30 the…read more

Kia Ora

Kia Ora! We are in country number 15.5 (if we count Zimbabwe and Qatar as 0.25 each). New Zealand, the land of kiwi fruit, kiwi birds and chocolate fish. Oh, and it’s the adventure capital of the world too. We had just one afternoon to spend in Auckland. We managed to squeeze in a hike up Mount Eden to see a panorama of the city, followed by an evening in the pub sampling the local beer and wine, and watching Djokavic overcoming Wawrenka in the semi-final of the Australian Open….read more

The Great Ocean Road

Posted by in Australia, Trip

The Great Ocean Road stretches along the south east coast of Australia. It was built to commemorate the soldiers killed during World War I, and is a beautiful coastal drive. On day one we set off from Melbourne towards Apollo Bay, with the plan of stopping off at any interesting places along the way. Our first stop was in the seaside town of Torquay, for an obligatory cake and coffee break. We accidentally ordered two of the biggest slices of carrot cake I have every seen. Oh well! We then…read more

Phillip Island

Posted by in Australia, Trip

For the last 9 months we have relied on public transport, our little legs and bicycles to see the world. For the first time, we have a hire car, and intend to make full use of it. Our first destination is Phillip Island, a small island just off the coast of Victoria. The island seems to be fully geared to catering for every desire a tourist may have: crazy golf, carting, Go Ape, vineyards etc. However, the island also has beautiful, unspoilt beaches and lots of wildlife. We spent most…read more

Good Morning Sports Fans

Posted by in Australia, Trip

I decided that it was time to escape the tropical heat of Brisbane and head south to visit Graham in Melbourne. I accidentally timed my visit rather well, with both the Australian Open and a Big Bash cricket game on while I was there. We had general ground passes for the tennis, but found out Andy Murray was due to play and managed to upgrade our passes so we could watch his match too. We arrived quite early and watched a bit of Goerges v. Koukalova before briefly catching up…read more

Mount Tambourine

Posted by in Australia, Trip

I have completed my final waitressing shift and have four weeks of adventures ahead of me, before I start working in Adelaide. On day one of this temporary liberty, Jimmy and I headed to Mount Tambourine. The name is slightly misleading, as it is actually a large plateau area in the Gold Coast Hinterland, with many walking tracks winding through the rainforest. We started the trip with a delicious lunch at the Vineyard. This was followed by a visit to the SkyWalk. Once again there were hundreds of eucalyptus trees,…read more
