Well Hung and Tender Down Under

Posted by in Australia, Trip

Five weeks working at the Adelaide Fringe, very little sleep and lots of adventures. Sarah M, Sarah C, Scotty and I are long term Well Hung and Tender staff who had joined up with Donald and Nicol in Adelaide to sell burgers and burritos to the Australian festival goers. Sarah M and I were staying in the residential wing of the Royal Adelaide Hospital, directly opposite the helicopter landing pad and on the same corridor as a lot of Fringe ‘atristes’. We were working for about 55 hours per week,…read more

The Great Ocean Road

Posted by in Australia, Trip

The Great Ocean Road stretches along the south east coast of Australia. It was built to commemorate the soldiers killed during World War I, and is a beautiful coastal drive. On day one we set off from Melbourne towards Apollo Bay, with the plan of stopping off at any interesting places along the way. Our first stop was in the seaside town of Torquay, for an obligatory cake and coffee break. We accidentally ordered two of the biggest slices of carrot cake I have every seen. Oh well! We then…read more

Phillip Island

Posted by in Australia, Trip

For the last 9 months we have relied on public transport, our little legs and bicycles to see the world. For the first time, we have a hire car, and intend to make full use of it. Our first destination is Phillip Island, a small island just off the coast of Victoria. The island seems to be fully geared to catering for every desire a tourist may have: crazy golf, carting, Go Ape, vineyards etc. However, the island also has beautiful, unspoilt beaches and lots of wildlife. We spent most…read more

Good Morning Sports Fans

Posted by in Australia, Trip

I decided that it was time to escape the tropical heat of Brisbane and head south to visit Graham in Melbourne. I accidentally timed my visit rather well, with both the Australian Open and a Big Bash cricket game on while I was there. We had general ground passes for the tennis, but found out Andy Murray was due to play and managed to upgrade our passes so we could watch his match too. We arrived quite early and watched a bit of Goerges v. Koukalova before briefly catching up…read more

Mount Tambourine

Posted by in Australia, Trip

I have completed my final waitressing shift and have four weeks of adventures ahead of me, before I start working in Adelaide. On day one of this temporary liberty, Jimmy and I headed to Mount Tambourine. The name is slightly misleading, as it is actually a large plateau area in the Gold Coast Hinterland, with many walking tracks winding through the rainforest. We started the trip with a delicious lunch at the Vineyard. This was followed by a visit to the SkyWalk. Once again there were hundreds of eucalyptus trees,…read more

Stradbroke Island

Posted by in Australia, Trip

North Stradbroke island is the second largest sand island in the world, and is located just off the coast of Brisbane. Thankfully it is quite easy to get there on public transport: a local bus to the ferry terminal, followed by a half hour ferry crossing and then another bus journey once you reach the island to take you to Point Lookout. When I got on the ferry the sun was shining, but about half way across a torrential downpour started. By the time I reached the other side, the…read more

Ending the year on a high

Posted by in Australia

Just wanted to post this mainly to remind myself of a brilliant day out! Went for a little post-gym-session bike ride which turned into a bit of a longer ride than I’d planned because it was just too nice a day to stop riding! The route was 90% cycle path, the wind was reasonable for once and the sun was shining all the way. Of course, having a steak sandwich and a coffee half way along may have contributed to the enjoyment…

The Glasshouse Mountains and the Hinterland

Posted by in Australia, Trip

Just a few miles inland from the Sunshine Coast are a range of volcanic plugs called the Glasshouse Mountains. These are surrounded by forest, plantations, scrub and swamp. There is a scenic forest drive running through the park, with lookout points along the way. After exploring the scenery we then stopped for lunch at a restaurant with an incredible panoramic view.

Living in the Worlds Most Liveable City

Posted by in Australia

While Kylie has been up in Brisbane, sweltering in the heat and dodging thunderstorms, I have been relaxing in the perfect climate that is theĀ Melbourne summer. I’m staying with Phil, an old Kiwi friend from my days working at a summer camp in the States (12 years ago!). Phil works in the local Science Museum which I’ve taken advantage of, with free entry to the museum and planetarium as well as free IMAX cinema tickets šŸ™‚ Well – it would be rude not to visit, eh? Pretty much the first…read more

A Tropical Christmas

Posted by in Australia, Trip

Every year, houses all over Brisbane compete to put on the best Christmas lights display. A few days before Christmas, Jimmy and I decided to check out some of the winners. This competition is taken pretty seriously, and there are even guided tours to take you to the best spots. The houses we saw were very….festive…. and quite interesting! I will let you judge for yourself from the photos below! Some people had gone all out, and were projecting films on the outside of their house. Some were playing music…read more
