Singapore

After a week in Chiang Mai I went to Singapore and Graham stayed in Thailand to travel around the islands.

I was going to Singapore to meet Paul, my partner in final-year-Chemistry-crime. Paul and his Dad met me at Changi airport and we went to stay with his Dad and his wife Jo at their house for the next four nights. In the car on the way there Paul casually asked if I was allergic to dogs, as there were three huge ones in the house. A bit late….but luckily I love them! For dinner on the first evening we had mince and tatties with white wine – lots of delicious things I was missing from home. Singapore certainly got off to a good start.

The following day Paul and I explored the centre of Singapore. We got dropped off at Raffles hotel in the morning, but decided to head for breakfast in a shopping mall instead as neither of us could afford to eat in the fancy hotel! Apparently nothing opens in Singapore until 10 am though, leaving us with no choice but to go to KFC and have blueberry pancakes.

We spent the day walking round the famous sights, visiting the marina, the merlion and the gardens by the bay to view the amazing trees. In the afternoon we indulged in a Singapore Sling cocktail in Raffles hotel and enjoyed the high life for an hour or so.

On day two we went to the zoo and saw lots of animals. Watching the orangutangs swinging in the trees and seeing the white tiger being fed were highlights.

Amazing to watch

On the final day we went to the water park on Sentosa island. It was a great lazy day, playing on slides and floating around the lazy river. It was incredible how many people decided to spend their holiday at a water park even though they couldn’t swim. There were people bobbing around in bright orange life jackets all over the place! The water park also had an area where you could snorkle and swim with thousands of brightly coloured fish which was pretty cool. The highlight of the day was probably the hydromagnetic water slide which could go up hill as well as down. Being the geeky scientist we are we researched how it worked as soon as we got home!

For our final evening we had a delicious bbq of steak and chicken back at the house. It was great catching up with Paul, and so nice to stay with his Dad and his Jo. While travelling I have been lucky to meet so many nice and interesting people, but I do miss friends from home. I was sad to leave, but at least Changi airport is full of fun things to entertain me while I wanted for my flight to Kuala Lumpur. My personal favourite was the free foot massage machine, which recommended a 15 minute massage per person. One hour later I was still there…oops. Lets catch up somewhere again soon Paul 🙂
